Our approach

The ‘hard sciences’ are hard. Even the greatest mathematical and scientific minds in history, from Newton to Noether to von Neumann, had to work hard.

We focus on you, and put you in the driving seat. No two students are exactly alike, and we adapt to your needs. That might mean going faster or slower, making connections to other topics, or lingering on the essentials before moving to harder examples.

In all cases, we offer clear explanations, illuminating discussions, and non-judgemental answers to questions (and there are no ‘stupid’ questions!), as deep into the technical details or as big-picture an overview as is helpful in the moment. With a true dialogue we can prevent the accumulation of misconceptions.

We are like a lever, or a system of gears, to help your hard work go farther. We are the force-multiplier, here to help you progress. And you will progress.

Lessons are tailored to your level and learning style, and planned to target areas needing additional focus.

As exams approach, we focus increasingly on practice questions and exam technique, including strategies for clearly and concisely setting out your work to pick up as many marks as possible, and ways to check for errors.

In our experience, the best outcomes come when you can find an hour or so, ideally within 24 hours of each lesson, to reinforce what we covered. We will typically give you one or two concrete tasks to try, with this objective.

If you know you won’t get a chance, say so and we will reinforce the important points within the lesson; if you have already planned some recap-time, feel free to ask for suggestions of additional specific tasks to focus on.

For as long as you are our student, we are a team invested in you and your progress. If you share your objectives with us, we will help you reach them.
